Chosen, Not Worthy—But His

I do not speak from a place of pride, nor do I claim any strength of my own. I am not destined for Heaven because I earned it. I am saved because Christ called me. Not because of what I’ve done, but because of who He is.

Like every follower of Jesus, I was not worthy to be chosen—but I was chosen nonetheless. And if you are in Christ, so were you. We could enter into a fruitless debate about election versus free will but that is, in my mind, a waste of time. Did I choose Him before He chose me? Did He choose me before I chose Him? In the end, the result is the same either way. I am His. He chose me. Whether His choice came before or after my own seems unimportant compared to the absolute miracle that He chose me at all! It is the miracle we live out every single day: the Holy One laid His hand upon the unholy and made us His own.

Jesus spells out this miracle Himself in the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John.

“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will but the will of Him who sent Me. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I should lose nothing of all that He has given Me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in Him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

John 6:37–40

This is our assurance: we are not clinging to Christ because our grip is strong. We are held because He is faithful. He will never cast us out. He will never lose us. We were given to Him by the Father, and He will raise us up.

We are a precious gift given by the Creator of the Universe to His only Son. To ponder this is to be in awe. We are not powerful—we are indwelt.

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”

Galatians 2:20

Every breath of obedience, every step of faith, every victory over sin—it is Christ in us. And this is not just an individual testimony, but the shared story of every believer. Together, we are a people shaped not by our worth, but by His mercy.

“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong… so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:27, 29

What grace is this? That He would set His love upon us?

“Even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love, He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace…”

Ephesians 1:4–6

We are not here because we climbed the ladder of morality. We did not achieve salvation. We received it. And even that receiving was a gift. As Paul reminds us:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Ephesians 2:8–9

So let us walk in humility. Let us serve with joy. Let us never forget that the highest honor we have in this life is not status, or recognition, or influence—but simply this: to be His.

We may not know why He chose us—but we know what it means: we are forgiven, we are held, we are being made new.

If you are one who feels unworthy: you are not alone. None of us are worthy. Take heart—you cannot be unchosen.

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”

1 John 3:1

We are chosen, not because we were deserving—but because He is.

And that is enough.
